Nomination "Responsible for those...": Activists from the Mehr va Oqibat Animal Welfare Society involved the police to rescue the tailed ones.
A shocking story happened in Uzbekistan this summer. Eco-activists and law enforcement officers stopped animal cruelty in one of the districts of the Tashkent region Podrobno.uz.
The hotline of the Mehr va Oqibat Animal Protection Society received a signal that there was a large concentration of dogs in the courtyard of one of the private houses. According to local residents, scary sounds similar to beating or killing animals were heard there at night.
"We have placed the rescued dogs in the shelters for homeless animals "Mehr" and "Khayet". The sanitary and epidemiological service, veterinary specialists and representatives of law enforcement agencies should start working on the territory itself. As far as we know, a criminal case is planned to be opened on this fact," the Mehr va Oqibat Animal Protection Society said.
According to the volunteers, despite the fact that eating dog meat is not allowed in Uzbekistan, this practice is flourishing in specialized cafes. At the same time, such establishments are popular with customers. And for an uninterrupted supply of meat, dog slaughterhouses are set up, where animals are raised that are doomed to a painful death, the journalists of the publication write. According to animal rights activists, there are such slaughterhouses in different regions of the country.
The management of Mehr va Oqibat has repeatedly contacted the Ministry of Internal Affairs, the State Veterinary Committee and the Sanitary and Epidemiological Service of Uzbekistan to find out whether permits are issued to establishments where dog dishes are prepared.
"Now we are part of a working group in the Oliy Majlis to finalize the law on the protection of animals from abuse. My colleagues and I are preparing proposals for amendments and additions to the current legislation of the Republic of Uzbekistan. According to our recommendations, amendments have already been made to the Administrative Code, with the direct participation of Mehr va Oqibat, an article of the Criminal Code was adopted that toughens penalties for knackers," the Animal Protection Society said.
"Mehr va Oqibat" in Russian means "Mercy and Kindness". This non-governmental non-profit organization has been operating in Uzbekistan since 2010. It is thanks to these activists that a charity pet sterilization program for low-income families and pensioners is operating in the country. Today, according to the volunteers, more than eight thousand animals have been sterilized.
Animal rights activists constantly carry out educational work in educational institutions and mahallas on humane treatment of animals. Well, one of the most important tasks for Mehr va Oqibat is a complete ban on dog meat dishes.
