Sailors of the nuclear icebreaker Yakutia rescued a moose

The nomination "Responsible for those ...": The crew members of the nuclear-powered ship could not get past the animal trapped by the ice.

The story that the media reported in May took place on the Yenisei River. The universal nuclear icebreaker Yakutia of FSUE Atomflot was independently sailing in the direction of the Karaul port point. On the Turushinsky ridge, the skippers noticed a moose trapped by ice on the edge of the canal. Turushinsky ferry is located in the Yenisei Delta, geographically it is very close to the Yenisei Bay. In May, this area is covered with ice and snow, and it may still be frosty.  And when it became clear that the animal could die, the huge nuclear icebreaker stopped.

"The animal couldn't get out of the ice trap on its own. We decided to help. We stopped so as not to injure the poor guy and started a rescue operation," said Dmitry Nikitin, captain of the nuclear icebreaker Yakutia.

Three people went down to the animal - senior assistant captain Vitaly Mengden, boatswain Anton Skorb and sailor Anatoly Kononov, the press service of FSUE Atomflot reports. At first, the sailors thought that there was a small moose in front of them, but then they came to the conclusion that it was a female moose that was captured in the ice.

Armed with shovels, three strong men tried to dig out a moose. The animal was so exhausted from the struggle for life that it did not even try to resist. Moose even allowed herself to be petted when the sailors tried to calm the poor guy. Having dug out almost half of the sochataya, it became clear that they could not do without outside help and connected a hook, which was very carefully threaded through the straps under the heavy beast.

They dug her up, but the animal became weak and could not escape from the ice captivity.  Then I had to use a crane. Sailor Kirill Kovalev carefully lifted the animal. The rescue operation took a little more than thirty minutes," the press service said.

The rescue operation was completed successfully, the animal was lifted without injury, the moose tried to free herself from the straps even in the air. But when she regained her freedom, she struggled to her feet and still managed to head towards the shore. And the crew of the nuclear icebreaker continued to work on their mission.
